On the edge: Obstruent clusters in Salish

چکیده
Given the striking tolerance across the Salish language family of lengthy sequences of obstruents (O), a fundamental question is how to assess whether such segments are syllabified, or not. Analysis of initial O sequences in the prefixal vs. root domains in h¢ ̃œ¢mi ̃¢Â reveals distinct generalizations with respect to constraints on ¢-epenthesis, on possible length of O clusters, and on featural specification with respect to both Place and Manner of articulation. It is argued that these observations support a hypothesis of non-exhaustive parsing of Os in the prefixal domain. Comparison with the O clustering properties of Nuxalk provides the basis of a proposed framework governing non-exhaustive parsing systems.

Phonetic structures of Montana Salish
Montana Salish is an Interior Salishan language spoken on the Flathead reservation in Northwest Montana by an estimated population of about 40 speakers. This paper describes the basic phonetic characteristics of the language based on data from five speakers. Montana Salish contains a number of typologically unusual consonant types. including glottalized sonorants, prestopped laterals, and a ser...
متن کاملTowards a Typology of Word-initial Consonant Clusters: Evidence from the Acquisition of Greek
In this paper, I study the production of consonant clusters by Greek children and examine the consequences of the acquisition data for phonological theory, with particular emphasis on the word-initial position. Using a non-word repetition test, I tested the order of acquisition of wordinitial and word-medial s+obstruent (sT), obstruent-obstruent (TT) and obstruent-sonorant (TR) clusters in 59 c...
متن کاملWord Initial Clusters in Acquisition
In this paper, I study the acquisition of consonant clusters by testing the production of Greek-speaking children. Using a non-word repetition task, I tested the order of acquisition of word initial and word medial s-obstruent (sT), obstruent-obstruent (TT) and obstruent-sonorant (TR) clusters in 59 children. The data presented here shed new light on the nature of word initial clusters that vio...
متن کاملTiming patterns of word-initial obstruent-sonorant clusters in Russian
This study investigates intra-cluster timing patterns in Russian obstruent-sonorant clusters as a function of their segmental composition. The results confirm for Russian a velar-nasal (/kn, gn/) vs. velar-lateral (/kl, gl/) timing difference like the one reported for German [2], but this could not be extended to labiallateral/nasal clusters (/vl, ml/ vs. /vn, mn/), which were all timed similar...
متن کاملLaryngeal Adjustments in the Production of Voiceless Obstruent Clusters in Berber
Laryngeal adjustments in voiceless obstruent clusters in Tashlhiyt Berber were examined by means of simultaneous transillumination, fiberoptic films and acoustic recordings. This language allows a rich variety of voiceless clusters naturally. Several combinations of /s/ and /k/ clusters including singleton and geminate consonants were examined. We focused on the number of glottal opening gestur...
